Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the 2005 Provincial Business meeting were distributed to the Masters and published on the Provincial website.  A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously approved to accept the minutes.

RICHARD McCloy Sr., Regional Supreme Program Consultant

  1. Presentation on Goal Setting and Membership Recruiting.

GEORGE L. MALLISON, Vice Supreme Master

1.          Sending Reports, etc.

a.     Please do not send reports, letters, etc. to the Supreme Master at his California address.  He has a dog that eats them.

b.     The correct address is 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, Conn.

2.          Al Hickey

a.     Al is no longer the VSM. Please send reports to George Mallison. His address is 11642 Sara Ann Drive, DeWitt, Mi. 48820-7795.

3.          What’s happening in your area?

a.     Keep VSM informed regarding things happening in your area.

b.     VSM would like to be aware of and attend as many as possible.

4.          Newsletters

a.     If you don’t have an Assembly newsletter you are missing one of the best forms for information transfer and communications.

5.          Vision of the 4th degree-

a.     A part of and not apart from the Order.

b.     We wish to have one drill manual. Carl Anderson feels we should look the same in Poland, Mexico, or Detroit, Michigan.

c.      Uniforms should be updated, clean, and sharp.

d.     Uniforms need to be brought up to date.

e.     One set of terminology, one uniform, one degree, and one drill manual..

6.          Membership is so important.

a.     You need to work on your goals.

b.     New assemblies represent new opportunities and create new enthusiasm. Do not look at it as a negative. If a member has tight relationships they do NOT have to move to the new assembly.

c.      Use the Charter member potential as an incentive to inspire the start of new assemblies.

d.     There are 50 new councils in our two states in the past year.  This represents an opportunity for new assemblies and new 4th degree members.

7.          Resolutions

a.     MUST be directed through your District meetings.  Do not send directly to the Province or Supreme. From the Provincial meeting the resolution is forwarded to the Supreme meeting and if it is approved it goes to the Supreme board.

b.     Many times the same resolution is submitted by many assemblies.

c.      Most end up tabled or denied.

d.     Supreme Board gives final approval.

8.          Reports

a.     Reports are necessary. They are also necessary ON TIME.

b.     The officer roster is necessary for Supreme to forward your packages.

c.      The Navigator package is overdue to be sent to you.

d.     Civic Award is easy.  Just write in four activities.  Every assembly should get this award.  There is no reason for not having 100% representation.

e.     To Be A Patriot award is attainable but you must take the time to properly present it.  Take the time and put together a nice booklet presentation. This award runs a year late because what the VSM turns in this year will not be presented until next year at the Supreme Convention.

9.          The new form 4

a.     It has a new box for the proposer and proposer’s membership number.

b.      This will be used for 500 prize points from Supreme the same as new 1st Degree member Rewards have been.

10.     Publication #4606-06

a.     You should order this new K of C publication on the Flag for your Assembly.

b.     Every Assembly should have a flag protocol officer.

11.     The Pledge of Allegiance

a.     It does not include “born & unborn” We are fighting to keep “under God” in our pledge.  The emphasis should be on this.

b.     “For All” means for all and we know that.

c.      Our focus should be on keeping “Under God” in the pledge.  Don’t let left wing courts remove from our Pledge.

12.     New Revised Drill Manual

a.     The new revised drill manual is still down the road, hopefully not too far.

13.     4th Degree Exemplification

a.     Do not add anything different to the 4th degree exemplification.  It must be purely by the book.

FRANK PAWELAK, Provincial Membership and Special Advisor

1.         Program 1-1-16

a.     One Veteran’s Program

b.     One Assist Team in every Council

c.      Planning for a 16% increase in membership

d.     We have met the first two now we must focus on the last one 16% increase in membership.

e.     To reach the 16% membership goal we need 4028 new Sir Knights.

f.       Choose the best of your best to run your membership programs.

g.     Consider having a special exemplification for your clergy.  They are usually tied up on Saturdays and Sundays.

h.     Being a Sir Knight is more than a title, it is an honor.

2.         Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services, serving those who served.

a.     The VSM forwards all the releases on this program to your Masters.

b.     We should be working with the veterans and their families.

c.      November 11th is Veterans day.  This is a day we should take stock in and do something patriotic.

d.     November 7th is election day. Get all your Brother Sir Knights out to vote. We are becoming a complacent country.  Even Iraq has a bigger voter turnout percentage than the U.S.

e.     Remember that the greatest gift we can give our men and women in uniform is our prayers.

GEORGE L. MALLISON, Vice Supreme Master

1.         Changes for Color Corp during the mass ceremony

a.     During the consecration we have been asked to not go up the aisles and present swords. This is not a localized thing. Knights in regalia are to remain in their seats and not do any activities during consecration except follow the mass with the rest of the congregation.

b.     The new liturgy is going to have lots of changes.

c.      Look at these changes as opportunities.

d.     You are the window of the order.  Everything you do reflects on the Order.

e.     Please adhere to this request.

f.       Do not ask the priest if it is o.k. to do this.

g.     If a priest asks you to NOT bring swords into church it is his prerogative.

Gary Eckstein/Ohio State Deputy

1.         You are here to make the 4th degree better, stronger, greater.

2.         You are putting in an investment by being here this weekend. You should challenge yourself.

3.         Whatever the mind can conceive and believe……..you can accomplish.

4.         One Ohio council has 250 new 3rd degree members and they have only been there for 2 years. They are going to have 60 new 4th degree members this year.  That is over 30%.

5.         You have 113,000 third degree members sitting out there.  Just ask them to joing the 4th.

6.         Ask your officers to bring in One new guy.

7.         Leave your assembly stronger than when you found it.

Tom Wegener/Michigan State Deputy

1.          Do things right.  The liturgy must be uniform in all churches.

2.          When we make our organizations uniform including our honor guard both in appearance and activity, we are doing things right.

3.          We do what we do for the love of country.

4.          Do everything with enthusiasm.

Jim Rich, Master Michigan District 3

1.          Membership………..quotas are minimums.

2.          We need to try new things. New paradigms.

3.          We need to hit 2-3 times our quota to be successful.

Walter Winkle Jr, Master Michigan District 1

1.          I am a new Master looking forward to working with the Navigators.

2.          I thank everyone for attending this Provincial meeting and welcome to District 1.

3.          First district meeting will be on October 14th at St Ephram.

4.          First exempt on March 2-3 right here at the Sterling Inn.

5.          St Pats parade on March 10th.

John Shutsa, Master Ohio District 1

1.          24 Assemblies if they meet their goals we will reach our goal of 281 sir knights.

2.          District meetings are all set check the Provincial website for dates.

Frank Iannaggi, Master Ohio District 3

1.         Purpose………Programs are necessary and our duty.

2.         We must be proactive especially on programs.

Bob Vandesteene, Master Michigan District 2

1.          My district has 2980 Sir Knights at this time.  We have over 19,139 total brother knights. This is 13.5%

2.          Last year we finished 92% of quota at 267 new sir knights.  However we only netted 107 new members with deaths and suspensions.  We have our work cut out for us.

3.          We are going to do some new things this year. The quota is only a starting point.

4.          This year it is District II’s turn to host the 4th degree part of the State Convention.  I am requesting that everyone bring their regalia to make a good showing.

5.          District meeting will be held in Lansing on October 14th.

Dave Hoffman, Master District Ohio 2

1.         Thanks to Former Master Richard Wysong for his many years of faithful service to the order.

2.         District meetings are scheduled.

Dennis Henderson, Provincial Secretary

1.         Our Memorial Mass of this morning was for our departed Sir Knights of the past Fraternal Year.  There were errors in the “In Memoriam” brochure.  There were misspellings, missing dates of death, and Sir Knights simply missing. I accept responsibility for this but next year I request that the forms be filled out legibly, completely, and on time.  If you do not have a computer or typewriter please ask someone who does to print the listings for you.

2.         E-mail prayer request program has been a learning experience for me during my first year. The feedback thanking us for our prayers has been very uplifting.

a.     Please take my e-mail address and send me your request if you would like to be included on this program.

b.     Please do not send me jokes and items of interest as I simply do not have the time to accommodate these. Our program is for prayer requests only.

c.      If you do receive a prayer request, please do say a prayer for our brother sir knight. Take 12 seconds to do this.

Father Doug Osborn, Michigan State Chaplain

1.         God Bless you all, your work, your efforts, the church needs you tremendously at this hour in the life of the church. Your faith and your example is exemplary, God Bless you all.

GEORGE L. MALLISON, Vice Supreme Master

1.         Next year, same time, same place.  See you here September 28th, 29th, and 30th of 2007.

2.         A great idea is to present the book, A Parish Priest about Father Michael McGivney to all of our priests.

Rev. James Swiat, Provincial Friar

1.         I was very honored when George asked me to be the Provincial Friar.  I will do my very best.

2.         It is already a miracle to see so many Ohio and Michigan men together enjoying each other’s company.

3.         Closing Prayer

Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the 2004 Provincial Business meeting were distributed to the Masters and published on the Provincial website. A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously approved to accept the minutes.

VICE SUPREME MASTER GEORGE L. MALLISON

VSM Mallison thanked Albert Hickey III Immediate Former Vice Supreme Master for his great service to the Order and the Hennepin Province.

Please remember Former Vice Supreme Master Rocco Veneziano, PSD who recently passed away and keep his Lady Virginia in your prayers. Rocco was instrumental in starting this tradition of the Hennepin Provincial Meeting. He will certainly be missed.

The VSM thanked Albert F. Hickey, III’s entire staff for their service to the Province as well.

At the Supreme Master’s meeting the VSM’s were asked to be advisors, inspectors, and mentors. The VSM expects you as the leadership of your Assemblies to also be advisors, inspectors, and mentors to your membership.

VSM Mallison mentioned that he had asked the Masters to make sure all paperwork be filled out on time this year. This includes applying for the Civic award. Navigators owe it to their members to apply for this well earned recognition. 100% involvement in the Civic Award would please the VSM this fraternal year. Navigators, you owe this to your Assemblies.

If Navigators have problems or concerns they should take it up the proper chain of command. That would be first with their Master he is the executive in your area. If the results are not achieved, contact the VSM. Do not directly contact the Supreme Master or Supreme Knight until you have followed the chain of command.

Communications:

a. The VSM will be sending out information either by the web or e-mails to keep our communication going.

b. Communication is one of the most important items an Assembly can use to promote growth and involvement of the members.

c. Work hard on your newsletter. Assemblies with good newsletters generally have good programs.

d. The Province will continue with the “Newsletter of the Year” awards.

Working with our Clergy:

e. Anyone who has conflicts with our clergy risks being removed from their position and possibly from the Order.

f. Do not be confrontational with a priest or bishop.

g. Get involved early in the liturgy so that the Clergy can have time to interact with you and the Color Corps.

Membership

h. In the coming year increasing membership in the Fourth Degree will be a main focal point.

i. Our jurisdiction represents 8½ % of the entire order in membership but are second to dead last in percentage of Fourth Degree members to 3rd degree members.

j. The Supreme Master and the Supreme Knight have a goal of 25% of all membership to be a Fourth Degree member in four years.

k. We must try to get younger gentlemen to join the Fourth Degree.

l. New assembly development is an item for us to focus in on. Assemblies with 8-12 Councils cannot do an adequate job for all of them. Generally an Assembly should have about 3-6 Councils. The exceptions would be with very small Councils. A possible goal would be to have one Assembly for each District Deputy’s area. Our Province will need 20 new Assemblies to meet Supreme guidelines.

Always check your Bi-Laws before you get over concerned on any issue.

The Supreme Master does not want mail sent to his home. Use his Supreme address if you communicate with him.

Fourth Degree UNIFORMITY

m. The Fourth Degree is ONE Fourth Degree A PART OF, not APART FROM the 3rd degree. One drill manual, one uniform, one set of terminology.

n. Color Corps must be regularly inspected. You are the window of the Order. The Color Corps is the pride and the joy of the order.

o. Make sure regalia is in good order, not frayed, etc. Please update with new. Keep it clean.

p. Some have the old baldric with the emblem of the Order not parallel to the ground. Please look for these and replace them with the new.

q. The VSM has asked that our Province ONLY wear one pin on their uniform. That pin is the small Fourth Degree pin. A new pin is now being designed by Supreme. When it is approved we will switch to it universally.

r. The VSM asked that we return back to a clean uniform, with no mini Jewels, Jewels of office, or any other jewels other than the Fourth Degree Pin.

Degree & Ceremonial Changes:

s. There are changes being studied for the Ceremonials for the1st, 2nd, 3rd and Fourth Degree programs.

t. There are also changes being made to the Manual for the Installation of Officers.

u. Some Fourth Degree Exemplification teams have unilaterally made changes such as including 9/11 and middle-east war items. This type of change or any other deviations from the Ceremonial are absolutely not allowed.

v. The VSM will be attending District Fourth Degrees and will be doing positive and constructive evaluations on them.

w. The VSM would like to see more Fall Exemplifications. We are missing many of the “snowbirds” who are still in the South when we hold our District Exemplifications in the Spring.

AWARD PROGRAMS

x. Recruiting Awards are being instituted for the Fourth Degree much like the 3rd degree. There will be 500 points awarded to a Sir Knight who recruits a new member.

y. There will also be a new Form 4 for the Comptrollers to use for membership information (Most likely after Jan 1).

z. New award for Assembly development.

aa. A new recruiting award for both the District and Provincial level.

In each Assembly the Pilot will be the Flag Protocol Officer. His duties are to make sure that the flags are handled and displayed properly and with respect. Take this position seriously.

There are several scholarships available through Supreme most sponsored by the Fourth Degree. Take a look at these to see if they might apply to you.

A flag program for schools is also being developed. There are materials, etc. to allow Assemblies to go to schools and present a program to the youth on the history of the flag and proper use and displaying.

FOUNDER’S DAY

bb. Founder’s day is March 29th for the Knights of Columbus. The Supreme Master would like this day to become a national holiday for the Order.

cc. Every Council and Assembly should plan on having an activity on this day. Events such as a special Mass, a barbeque, etc. would be appropriate.

FLAG DAY

dd. Supreme is developing a new flag program. They have acquired 27 different flags which represent the history of the US Flag. Supreme intends on reproducing the set and using for large Color Corps call-outs. The Flags will first be used on a National then Provincial level. Supreme hopes to have sets of flags in every Fourth Degree District.

ee. On Flag Day the Assemblies should be doing a program such as a Flag Retirement Ceremony.

ff. Last year there was a Provincial resolution for a universal Flag Retirement Ceremony for our Order. It was passed at the Supreme Assembly meeting and forwarded to the Supreme Board for action.

Frank Pawelak on Membership & Programs

gg. Veterans Programs:

i. Veteran’s hospitals serve hundreds of veterans.

ii. Our first concern should be the veterans themselves. Consider starting a program for them.

iii. Please start ONE veterans program this year.

hh. Assist Programs:

i. Each Council should have one assist team leader from the Assembly.

ii. The leader should lead the Pledge at the Council meetings.

iii. The leader should give a Fourth Degree report on the Assembly activities.

ii. Membership Recruiting

i. Recruiting a brother knight into the Fourth Degree is the right thing to do. We owe it to our brother knights to do it.

ii. 70% of Knights are over the age of 50.

iii. 50% of the Knights are over the age 70.

iv. Hennepin Province is second to last in membership.

v. Assure that Priests are first Knights and then move them up to the Fourth Degree.

vi. Ask Assembly Friars to help recruiting to the Fourth Degree.

vii. 16% increase in new membership is the goal for this year.

VICE SUPREME MASTER COMMENTS CONTINUED

Supreme Master has requested that each Assembly make a contribution to the Katrina relief fund to the Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. Additional information on Supreme web site. This should be considered a Patriotic activity and also one of great importance. Remember the Fourth Degree is the leadership of the order and we need to set the example in this project. Thank you to all who took part in the program. For those Assemblies who did not make a donation please consider at your next meeting.

It is highly likely that Father McGivney will be raised to the Honor of the Altar this coming year. We MUST be ready to defend this and defend our priests, our faith and our church.

Every Assembly should apply for a “To Be A Patriot Award.” You owe it to your Assemblies. Be proud of what you do and publicize it.

Reports on line will be coming soon. Forms will also be available on line.

State Deputy of Ohio Gary Eckstein

jj. The Fourth Degree must work as closely as possible with their Councils.

kk. Father McGivney wanted all Catholic men to be Knights. We must FIRST recruit at the 1st degree level then on to the Fourth Degree level.

State Secretary of Michigan, Thomas Wegener

ll. Congratulations to VSM George Mallison on his new appointment and thanks to Albert Hickey for his great job.

mm. Change is all around our Province. New Ohio State Deputy, new District in Ohio, and a new Vice Supreme Master. We must listen, change, and then act.

Fred Sleeman/Michigan District One

nn. Exemplification scheduled for March 12th. Honoree will be Former Master, Jerry Wrobleski. Please join us for this event if you can.

oo. I have just begun my last year as a Master. Please support my replacement as you have supported me. Please support our new VSM as you have supported FVSM Albert Hickey, III. We will remain one of the best Provinces in the Order.

John Shutsa/Ohio District One

pp. Congratulations to George he will be do a GREAT job.

qq. We will also miss Al Hickey III he really brought the Province together.

rr. We may consider having a Fall Exemplification for those who cannot make the spring.

ss. All officers of the Assembly should attend the District meetings.

tt. Everything has been said. Now you must take it home with you and act on it.

James Rich/Michigan District Three

uu. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is rather remote. We just had a Fourth Degree Exemplification and it went very well.

vv. 7 out of 11 Assemblies are over quota. One is at 400% of quota. They have issued a challenge to the other Assemblies by their actions.

ww. Let your actions speak accordingly.

Dick Wysong/Ohio District Two

xx. March 18th & 19th exempt and a second on March 25th & 26th.

yy. Being Master is the “Best” job in the Knights of Columbus.

zz. Thanks to Father Mark for all your support and thank you for your vocation. VIVAT JESUS!

Bob Vandesteene/Michigan District Two

aaa. Programs bring membership. You have to give them something they want to belong to.

bbb. Last April we had a class of 184. Jackson Assembly had 50 new members alone. That was 300% of quota for them.

ccc. Fall exempt in Muskegon. Bishop Baraga had 16 new members out of a class of 50 or 400% of quota.

ddd. “Every Priest a Fourth Degree Knight” is a new program Bob is starting in District II.

eee. Priests tend to get lost on rosters when they are transferred to other parishes. Please check on this.

fff. Bishop Murray asked us to not forget the Deacons. We must find a way of locating and identifying them as well.

ggg. At our April Exemplification in Jackson we had the honor of having the Pilgrim Statue of Fatima with us.

Francesco Iannaggi/Ohio District 3

It is truly a wonderful and humbling experience to be appointed a Master. I am really grateful to all who have endorsed me. I have experienced “Fraternity” 100 times over each day since my appointment.

Thank you for all the support since my new appointment to Master.

I am an “Italian American Immigrant.

I am proud to be a Catholic American citizen.

I became an American Citizen on June 10, 1977. It was the most exciting day of my life. It truly humbled me and I truly hope to fulfill all your expectations.

I urge you to take pride of your American birthright. There is nothing greater than being an American and a Knight of Columbus.

NEW BUSINESS:

None at this time.

Baci Carpico/PSD, FVSM

hhh. Remember in your prayers Rocco Veneziano PSD, FVSM, who started these Provincial Meetings years ago.

iii. You have accepted tremendous responsibilities. Please take them seriously and do your best to increase our membership.

Albert F. Hickey III

jjj. It has been a Great four years. Al now bleeds a little red, a little blue, and a little green. You have to be “One” in the Hennepin Province.

kkk. The Fourth Degree is the best of the best.

lll. We cannot keep those blinders on. We must help the Councils recruit more new 1st degree members so that we have more Fourth Degree members.

mmm. I have served the Order for over 20 years and am now being paroled.

nnn. Thanks to my great staff over the past four years.

ooo. Special thanks to Father Mark, my Provincial Friar.

GOOD OF THE ORDER
